Temporary selfie, soon to be updated with a more flattering, professional type photo

I live in a small town in Southern Ontario (Canada) near Lake Erie with my boyfriend, my 2 teenage daughters (who will soon be off to college), our 2 year golden retriever Tucker, and Betty the cat.

Aside from golden retrievers, food and wine are two of my many guilty pleasures.  Cooking (and eating) is what I do for fun, especially when it involves a glass of wine and a furry audience member ready to clean up my every scrap that drops to the floor.  While doing so, I like to listen to music.  I love some great Canadian stuff like Barenaked Ladies and Great Big Sea.  I also love Beyonce and Alisha Keys.

Tucker is the second golden retriever that I have owned.  My first, Logan, lived until 11 years old, after suffering horrible seizures for the last year or so of his life.  He was the ultimate family dog, and was the victim of many dress up sessions and excessive cuddles, and he lived a great life.

Since becoming a member of this amazing pet community online, I have decided that from here on out I will choose to rescue.  I strongly believe there is still a very big place in this world for responsible breeding. (PETA extremists, designer dog breeders, and puppy mill breeders, this is NOT the place for you)   My love for golden retrievers started with visiting some very caring and enthusiastic hobby breeders, and grew from there.  Regardless, my “puppy” days are over, I have learned much, and dream to have an acre or so and a one level house where I can take in a couple of special needs and/or seniors someday.  My life will always be filled with golden retrievers.  This is my destiny, and I am okay with this.

I cannot, and will not claim to be an expert on golden retrievers.  I don’t breed them, show them, compete with them or hunt with them.  I cuddle them and play with them and read about them and blog about them.  After two years of blogging, I consider myself a bit of an expert on their “pop culture” as far as celebrities, movies, commercials, recent health news, big news stories (sometimes happy, sometimes incredibly sad) and exceptional golden retrievers around the world.

The readers and the friends I have made through blogging have kept me going, as well as my love for this breed.  Thanks for taking the time!

If you have a product you would like me to review, a special golden you would like to nominate for “golden retriever of the month”, wish to share a story, or contact me for any reason, please email me at

  5. Thank you for visiting my blog and liking my post. This is such a fun blog. I love the celebrity posts. It is fun to see who has golden retrievers. I look forward to seeing more!

  6. What a great idea! We don’t have a dog now – we just enjoy our neighbors’ dogs and all the benefits of being furry child free (e.g., travel without worry). For our first 13 years together, we shared our life with a beautiful spring spaniel…his name was…drum roll…TUCKER! My husband picked the name – I think he said something about a highway sign for the town of that name in the Atlanta GA area, and it having the right ring to it. You can check him here: http://abundelic.wordpress.com/2012/11/30/furry-foto-friday/

  7. Hi! Thank you for liking my post, especially since it has led me to your wonder golden retriever blog. Such beautiful dogs, and they’re doing beautiful and important work in Newtown. I’m going to follow you. Thanks for your blog.

  8. Thanks for visiting and liking my blog post of pictures of my golden, Ginger. Obviously my husband and I are golden people. Ginger and her sister Lucy pretty regularly show up on my blog. I can’t wait to see more of your posts as well! Virginia

  9. MaggieMoose lives in the land of Golden Retrievers! Her breed, English Springer Spaniel (ESS) dogs are rare here. We’ve seen one ESS besides Maggie, but lots of beautiful Goldens. The Goldens are prized family members in our Peninsula area (south of San Francisco, CA). Maggie says WOOF WOOF!
Thanks for stopping by and Liking us. 🙂 🙂

  10. I found this blog on pinterest and I am so glad I did. I have a 1 year old golden and she is such a huge part of my life :)… I will be checking back often for more golden news

  11. Hey, just thought i would let you know that i have nominated you for the “very inspiring blogger award 2013” – not really sure what it is but its nice to be appreciated. Happy blogging! 🙂

  12. Love your blog! I’ve just started mine and I’m very inspired. Had a pretty rough day but seeing all these lovely goldie pictures just made it all better. Keep up the good work 🙂

  13. Hi Shannon,
I love all retrievers and have had several Labradors of my own ( someday to have a golden). I just wanted you to know that I posted one of your stories and a link back to your page on my own blog. Love your blog, thanks for writing!

  14. Just discovered this HL. I haven’t been able to respond to awards lately, as you can see I am not blogging as much as usual. Life with 12 hour shifts and two teenagers. You are my virtual bestie, and am truly honored!

  15. Lol…I was viewing your header photo of the row of goldens, and it made me think, wow you have the other end of the spectrum. All of ours have been the darker end. Such a beautiful breed, and I am speaking of their hearts. Loyal and devoted companions every one.

  16. I have grown up with Goldens my whole life and they are truly wonderful dogs. I’ve yet to meet a bad one. Layla, our Golden, is the best dog I’ve ever had. She’s a little over 2 now, but she’s my big sweetie. I enjoyed scrolling through your blog and seeing the interesting pictures and posts.

  17. Shannon, is there a way to contact you privately to ask about a giveaway of my new novel, AN UNEXPECTED GRACE? It’s about a woman and a rescued golden who help each other recover from trauma and abuse — and it’s a Barnes & Noble national bestseller. I want so much to spread the word about Grace, who is the world’s most wonderful dog. I’d like to connect with you!

  18. Shannon, I just stumbled on your blog while watching the Subaru and Budweiser commercials..
I have had two Golden’s and will never own another breed. My Carson is 5 yrs.old and smarter than a 5th grader. I thought my Lakota was smart but Carson I think has more of a yearning for learning and all he wants to do is help. He knows more words than I can count, I just talk to him like he’s a kid and he does whatever I say… We lost our first Golden, Lakota to Renal failure at the age of 8 and my husband and I have never gotten over that loss.. I love all animals, all dog breeds, but Golden’s are the best!

    1. Not to brag but Carson sounds like my Tucker. I can name any toy and he will almost always go and find the correct one. I must get this on video sometime. He is a little more “hyper” than my last golden, but so eager to learn and work. I need to start doing more with him! Hide and seek is getting boring. Glad you found my blog and hope you stay!

  19. Hi, love to read all those things about the goldens.
But how/or can I send in a picture from my goldens?
    Greetings from the Netherlands

  20. I’m sorry I can’t come back and visit your blog again. I might die of acute cuteness overload ;-). Thanks so much for liking my ‘Retrieve this’-post!

  21. I love reading The Daily Golden! I am also from Ontario and love the Barenaked Ladies!! Whoo Hoo…I am now a misplaced Canuck living in SC with hubby and 2 Goldens! Attached is our story on how we got Bella and since then we have gotten Lucce too. Bella Lucce = Beautiful Glow (in Italian) .http://www.workwithnettyandsam.com/blog/bellas-story I am NOT spamming my business, I just wanted to share our story…..thank you!

  22. Hi Daily Golden
We just found your awesome blog. Love it.

Junior is a rescue and an Ambassadog with golden rescue here in Texas,in addition to bring a Therapy Dog and Reading dog. He and Tucker would make great golden buddies. They would probably wind up at a party with lampshades on their heads.

We are now following you and hope we keep the golden conversation going.

    Paws Up ,
    Jill and Junior

    1. Thanks so much! Following back! Thanks so much for all you do. You are right, Tucker and Junior would be the best of friends. I have always wanted to visit Texas 🙂

      Shannon and Tucker.
