Homemade Cookies for your Golden Retriever

I received my cookie cutters from cheap cookie cutters the other day and finally had time to make Tucker some treats tonight.

With all the pet food and treat scares I like to make Tucker homemade cookies. I have refined my recipe as follows

2 C flour (rice, whole wheat, all purpose whatever)
1 C oats
1/4 C honey
1 C peanut butter
3/4 C hot water
1 egg
Drizzle olive or flax seed oil

Combine ingredients and roll out and cut into shapes.

Bake at 350 F for about 10 to 15 minutes until golden on edges and cooked through, depending on thickness.

Would You Use Medical Marijuana For Your Golden Retriever?

So your golden retriever has just been diagnosed with cancer and is very weak and lethargic, and in a lot of pain. If you knew there was an option to ease pain and increase appetite in a safe, chemical free way would you consider it? What if that option was marijuana, what many consider to be the root of all evil?

Marijuana is now legal in over 20 states in the U.S. and has been proven very effective for palliative care in humans, as well as treating many other illnesses.

Dr. Doug Kramer of California is a pioneer in the concept of using medical marijuana to treat dogs and cats and has his own clinic Enlightened Veterinary Therapeutics specializing in palliative and hospice care for pets. The marijuana is administered in the form of a tincture. Dr Kramer is not an advocate of feeding your dog “pot brownies” or blowing smoke in their faces. In an article from Vice he says:

To me, it’s animal abuse, really. It kills me because it devalues what I’m trying to do. Especially in the early stages, starting the dialogue with veterinary medicine, the last thing you want is for people to do that. The dog doesn’t need the medication in that situation.”

Would you use medical marijuana to ease suffering for your golden? I consider it a herbal remedy and certainly would. Please vote! No email or obligation required…

Golden Video of the Week – Golden Retriever Puppy Attacks Camera

I am really not sure if there is anything on this earth more adorable than a golden retriever puppy…

Suspected Murder Scene is Water Trail from Golden Retriever

In Almere, Holland, a picture taken by a Google Image helicopter raised concerns that a horrific crime had taken place.

The image looked like a trail of blood leading down a dock. It went viral and eventually the dog’s owner Jacquelina Koenen saw the picture.

Jacquelina, 52, told The Sun: “When I saw the picture I realized, ‘It’s my dog’. He loves the water.”

“He jumps off the end of the jetty, swims round to the bridge and runs down to the edge again. It’s hilarious that everyone thought it was murder. But it’s great he’s now world famous.”

Rama is a 5 year old golden retriever.  The police have apparently confirmed the dog’s innocence!

Facebook Helps in Locating Golden Retrievers Missing for 5 days

South Bend, IN – Golden Retriever owners Tim and Stephanie Hein are crediting Facebook for the safe return of their two golden retrievers, Maggie and Cinnamon.

The dogs went missing from their South Bend property on Tuesday April 9th, they went chasing after a deer.  Despite the Heins efforts searching on foot and by car every day, their hopes were starting to diminish.

They had posted flyers and had people spreading the word on Facebook.  5 days later, they got a message from someone 7 miles away saying she had spotted the dogs on her front porch.  Tim drove to the ladies home and found the dogs in the field behind the home.

According to a story on Fox 28, the couple says “I don’t think we would’ve found our dogs without Facebook.”  “It’s amazing what people can accomplish when they come together like that.”

Golden Retrievers Help Comfort Victims in Boston

The K-9 Parish Comfort Dogs are on the ground in Boston acting as furry counselors for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing incident.  This group of dogs and handlers are from Lutheran Church Charities in Addison, Illinois and have been helping ease the pain of victims after tragic events.  They were on scene after the shooting in Newtown, at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The five golden retrievers and their handlers are stationed at First Lutheran Church, which is a few blocks from the finish line of yesterday’s marathon, the site of Monday’s bombings.  They will spend the rest of this week visiting the injured at Tufts Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

LCC President Tim Hetzner told Today.com “They bring a calming effect to people and help them process the various emotions that they go through in times like this.”

The Comfort Dog program began in 2008 after a gunman killed five students at Northern Illinois University and now has over 60 dogs in six states.

Isaiah, Addie, Maggie, Luther and Ruthie are all golden retrievers with their own Facebook pages, business cards and Twitter accounts so people can stay in touch after meeting.

Another organization, Dog B.O.N.E.S Therapy Dogs of Massachusetts was also ready to help.  Here, golden retriever Bailey (and handler Jack Foley) are standing by.  B.O.N.E.S. stands for Building Opportunities for Nurturing and Emotional Support.

Golden Retriever of the Month – Daisy!

Daisy is a beautiful 4 year old golden retriever from Winchester, Kentucky.  She has a sidekick named Lilly, (a beagle) and a great human named Courtney who loves to train her, take cool pictures and videos, and has recently started agility training.

Daisy came to her home when she was a small puppy, and right from the start, she was treated like the princess that she is!

She now is a pro at getting “dressed up”!  Daisy and Lilly get decked out for most special occasions.

Sometimes it doesn’t go as planned, but they have fun!

Daisy has graduated from Click-A-Trick training and can do about 25 different tricks, like bowing, waving, and playing dead.  Here’s Lilly and Daisy showing off for the camera:

You can see all of her tricks on their YouTube Channel Lilly and Daisy the Dogs
